How Much Does an Emergency Dentist Visit Cost in Virginia?

An emergency dentist visit in Virginia usually costs between $100 and $350 for the exam and X-rays alone. Total costs often range from about $200 to $2,500 or more once treatment is added. A simple exam with pain relief sits at the low end. A Root Canal, same-day Crown, or surgical Extraction pushes the total higher. Where you live in the state and how quickly you get care all shape the final bill.

The answer to “How Much Does an Emergency Dentist Visit Cost in Virginia?” depends less on the visit itself and more on what the dentist finds. This guide covers typical price ranges for the most common dental emergencies, explains what drives those numbers up or down, and outlines the ways patients pay for urgent care. All figures are general estimates for Virginia. Every patient’s needs and every office’s fees are different.

Understanding Emergency Dental Care Costs

Emergency dental costs come in two layers. The first layer is diagnosis: the exam, the X-rays, and the dentist’s assessment of what is causing the problem. The second layer is treatment: the Filling, Crown, Root Canal, Extraction, or other procedure that fixes it.

Many patients expect a single flat price for an “emergency visit.” In reality, the exam fee is only the starting point. The total depends on what treatment is needed and whether it happens the same day or over several visits.

What Is Emergency Dentistry?

Emergency Dentistry covers dental problems that are not life-threatening but cannot wait for a routine appointment. Common examples include:

  • A severe or throbbing toothache

  • A cracked, chipped, or broken tooth

  • A knocked-out tooth

  • A swollen jaw or abscess

  • A lost Filling or Crown

  • A broken Denture, Bridge, or orthodontic appliance

  • Bleeding or painful gums

  • An object stuck between the teeth

At Dentcare Now, we operate as an urgent dental care office in Fairfax, VA. We are open 7 days a week, including weekends and holidays, and patients can call, text, or book online 24/7. We accept walk-ins and can generally see patients the same day. Patients with appointments are prioritized, so booking ahead shortens the wait.

Our two dentists, Dr. Rasheeda Johnson and Dominique Bonner, treat emergencies alongside restorative, cosmetic, periodontal, endodontic, orthodontic, and implant care. Because every specialty is under one roof, many patients can move from diagnosis to treatment in the same visit. Learn more on our Emergency Dentistry.

Factors Affecting the Cost of Emergency Dental Visits

Several factors shape what you pay for urgent dental care in Virginia.

Location within the state. Fees in Northern Virginia and the DC metro area tend to run higher than in rural parts of the state. Higher rent, staffing, and lab costs drive this difference.

Type of treatment. A simple Filling costs far less than a Root Canal and Crown. The diagnosis determines most of the bill.

Diagnostic imaging. Standard digital X-rays cost less than 3D imaging. Complex cases such as impacted Wisdom Teeth Removal or jaw infections may need 3D views. At our office, we use digital X-rays, 3D digital X-rays, intraoral cameras, and AI X-ray analysis to help pinpoint the problem.

Number of visits. Some offices stabilize a tooth on day one and finish treatment days or weeks later. Each visit can add fees. Our in-house lab and CEREC® technology allow us to make many Crowns and restorations in a single visit, which can cut down on repeat appointments.

Sedation. Nitrous oxide or other sedation options add to the cost but help anxious patients get through treatment.

Timing. Waiting usually raises costs. A small cavity that becomes an abscess can turn a Filling into a Root Canal or Extraction.

Typical Costs for Common Emergency Dental Treatments in Virginia

The ranges below are general estimates for patients paying without insurance in Virginia. They are meant to help with planning. Your exact cost depends on your diagnosis and treatment plan.

Toothache Treatment Costs

A toothache is a symptom, not a diagnosis. The first cost is finding the cause.

  • Emergency exam: about $100 to $350

  • Digital X-rays: about $25 to $250, depending on how many images are needed

  • Pain relief or temporary treatment: about $100 to $300

Once the cause is clear, the next step might be a Filling, a Root Canal, or an Extraction. Each of those carries its own cost, covered below. A toothache caused by trapped food or mild gum irritation may cost only the exam fee. A toothache from a deep infection will cost more.

Cracked or Chipped Tooth Treatment Costs

Small chips are often fixed with dental bonding. Larger cracks may need a Crown or, in severe cases, a Root Canal.

  • Dental bonding: about $150 to $600 per tooth

  • Porcelain Veneer for a front tooth: about $900 to $2,500 per tooth

  • Crown for a cracked back tooth: about $1,100 to $2,500

Bonding is usually the most affordable option for minor chips. A crack that reaches the nerve changes the plan and the price. Getting seen quickly can keep a minor crack from spreading.

Broken or Missing Tooth Treatment Costs

A broken tooth may be restored with a Crown or bonding. A tooth that is broken below the gum line may need to be removed and replaced.

A knocked-out tooth is time-sensitive. If you bring the tooth to our office, we can help preserve it. Typical costs include:

  • Reimplanting and splinting a knocked-out tooth: about $300 to $1,000

  • Temporary tooth replacement with a flipper: about $300 to $1,000

  • Permanent replacement with a Bridge or Implant: see the sections below

We offer same-day Dentures, flippers, and tooth replacement. This means patients do not have to leave with a visible gap while they plan a permanent solution. Our page on broken tooth care covers the conditions we treat.

Abscessed Tooth Treatment Costs

An abscess is a pocket of infection at the root of a tooth or in the gums. It often causes swelling, throbbing pain, and a bad taste. Treatment usually happens in stages.

  • Incision and drainage: about $200 to $600

  • Antibiotic prescription: often $10 to $50 at the pharmacy

  • Root Canal to save the tooth: about $700 to $1,800

  • Extraction if the tooth cannot be saved: about $150 to $800

The total for an abscess often lands between $900 and $3,000 once a Crown is added after a Root Canal. Incision and drainage is one of the services we perform most often at our office. Treating an abscess early typically costs less than treating one that has spread.

Gum Disease Treatment Costs

Gum problems become urgent when they cause bleeding, swelling, pain, or loose teeth. Treatment costs depend on how advanced the disease is.

  • Deep Cleaning through scaling and root planing: about $200 to $400 per quadrant

  • Periodontal maintenance Cleanings: about $150 to $300 per visit

  • Gingival Graft: about $700 to $3,000 per site

A full-mouth deep Cleaning can run $800 to $1,600. Ongoing maintenance visits keep the condition under control. We also offer ultrasonic Cleaning and Perio Protect as part of our periodontal care.

Dental Filling Costs

Lost Fillings and new cavities are common emergencies. Most Fillings today are tooth-colored composite resin.

  • Composite Filling: about $150 to $450 per tooth

  • Inlay or onlay for larger damage: about $650 to $1,500 per tooth

The size of the cavity and the number of tooth surfaces involved drive the price. A small one-surface Filling sits at the low end. A large Filling on a molar sits at the high end. See our Dental Fillings page for more detail on the materials we use.

Dental Crown Costs

Crowns protect teeth that are cracked, heavily filled, or weakened after a Root Canal.

  • Porcelain or ceramic Crown: about $1,100 to $2,500

  • Temporary Crown: often included, or about $100 to $300 if billed separately

Traditional Crowns take two visits. Patients wear a temporary Crown for one to three weeks while a lab makes the final Crown. With CEREC® and our in-house lab, we make many Crowns in one visit. A same-day Crown removes the need for a second appointment and a temporary Crown. Digital impressions from our iTero® and TRIOS® scanners also replace messy putty molds.

Broken Crown Repair Costs

A Crown can loosen, crack, or fall off. The cost depends on whether the Crown can be reused.

  • Recementing an intact Crown: about $100 to $350

  • Repairing a small chip in a Crown: about $150 to $500

  • Replacing a damaged Crown: about $1,100 to $2,500

If your Crown comes off, keep it and bring it with you. If the tooth underneath is healthy and the Crown is undamaged, recementing is a quick and low-cost fix. Decay under the Crown may mean a new Crown is needed. Our lost Crown page explains the conditions we see most.

Root Canal Treatment Costs

A Root Canal removes infected or inflamed tissue from inside a tooth so the tooth can be saved. Costs rise with the number of roots in the tooth.

  • Front tooth: about $700 to $1,200

  • Premolar: about $800 to $1,400

  • Molar: about $1,000 to $1,800

Most back teeth also need a Crown after a Root Canal. That brings the combined cost for a molar to about $2,100 to $4,300. We use WaveOne® Gold instruments to make Root Canal treatment more comfortable and efficient. Pairing a Root Canal with a same-day Crown can mean fewer visits overall. Visit our Root Canals page to learn more.

Tooth Extraction Costs

Extraction costs depend on whether the tooth is fully visible or needs a surgical approach.

  • Simple Extraction: about $150 to $400 per tooth

  • Surgical Extraction: about $300 to $800 per tooth

  • Impacted Wisdom Teeth Removal: about $300 to $900 per tooth

  • Bone graft to preserve the site: about $400 to $1,200

A bone graft is often recommended when a patient plans to replace the tooth with an Implant later. Extractions with bone grafting are among the most common treatments we provide. Sedation, if chosen, adds to the total. Our Extractions page covers both routine and Wisdom Teeth Removal.

Braces Repair Costs

Orthodontic emergencies include broken Braces, poking wires, and lost or cracked Retainers.

  • Bracket rebonding or wire adjustment: about $50 to $300

  • Replacement Retainer: about $150 to $600

Many orthodontic emergencies are minor and fast to fix. A poking wire can often be clipped in a short visit. Since we offer Braces, Invisalign, and Retainers, we can handle these repairs in our office. Our orthodontics page outlines our orthodontic services.

Denture and Bridge Costs

Broken Dentures and loose Bridges can make eating and speaking hard. Costs vary based on repair versus replacement.

  • Denture repair: about $100 to $500

  • Partial Denture: about $800 to $3,000

  • Complete Denture: about $1,500 to $4,000 per arch

  • Implant Dentures: about $8,000 to $25,000 per arch

  • Three-unit Bridge: about $2,500 to $6,000

  • Recementing a loose Bridge: about $150 to $400

A cracked Denture can sometimes be repaired the same day. When a full replacement is needed, our in-house lab supports same-day Denture and flipper options so patients are not left without teeth. Learn more on our Dentures page.

Dental Implant Costs

Implants are the most durable way to replace a missing tooth, and they also carry the highest upfront cost.

  • Single Implant with abutment and Crown: about $3,500 to $6,000

  • Same-day Implant: often in a similar range, with fewer visits

  • All-on-X Dental Implants full arch: about $15,000 to $30,000 per arch

Implant costs may also include Extractions, bone grafts, and 3D imaging. We offer immediate and same-day Dental Implants, which can place an Implant on the day a damaged tooth is removed. This approach can reduce the total number of appointments and the time spent without a tooth.

Paying for Emergency Dental Care

Knowing how much does an Emergency Dentist visit cost in Virginia is only half the picture. The other half is knowing how you will pay. Patients have several options, and most combine more than one.

Using Dental Insurance

Most PPO dental plans cover part of emergency care. Typical coverage patterns look like this:

  • Exams and X-rays: often 80% to 100% covered

  • Fillings and Extractions: often 70% to 80% covered

  • Root Canals: often 50% to 80% covered

  • Crowns, Bridges, and Dentures: often 50% covered

  • Implants: coverage varies widely, and some plans exclude them

Keep your deductible and annual maximum in mind. Many plans cap yearly benefits at $1,000 to $2,000. A Root Canal and Crown in the same year can use most of that.

Dentcare Now accepts all PPO dental insurance plans, including plans with out-of-network benefits. We are not in-network with any insurance plan and operate as a fee-for-service office. As a courtesy, we file insurance on your behalf so you can receive reimbursement for covered services. Payment is due at the time of service unless other arrangements are made in advance.

Before treatment, ask for a written estimate. This shows the planned procedures and fees so you can compare them with your plan’s benefits.

Payment Plans and Financing Options

Financing spreads the cost of urgent care into monthly payments. This helps when a Root Canal, Crown, or Implant comes up without warning.

We offer financing through:

  •
  • Sunbit

  • Alphaeon

  • LendingClub

  • Cherry

We also offer in-house payment plans. Many financing programs offer promotional periods with low or no interest when paid in full within the term. Read the terms closely so you know when interest applies.

For patients without insurance, our membership plans make care more affordable. Each plan is paid monthly or yearly and includes an emergency visit exam:

  • Care plan: two Cleanings, one exam, one emergency visit exam, one set of X-rays, and a 5% discount on other treatment

  • Elite plan: four Cleanings, one exam, one emergency visit exam, one set of X-rays, and a 10% discount on other treatment

  • Luxe plan: a monthly treatment credit, one set of X-rays, a 20% discount on other treatment, and priority scheduling

A membership can pay for itself quickly if an emergency comes up during the year. The built-in emergency exam and treatment discount lower the cost of urgent care.

We accept cash, Visa, Discover, MasterCard, American Express, and money orders. We do not accept personal checks.

Medicaid and Low-Cost Dental Services in Virginia

Virginia Medicaid includes dental benefits for adults and children. Adults gained comprehensive dental coverage through the state program in 2021. Covered services generally include exams, X-rays, Fillings, Extractions, and some Root Canals and Dentures.

Dentcare Now does not list Medicaid as an accepted insurance. If you have Medicaid or another state plan, our team will need to confirm whether your specific plan can be used. We are glad to follow up with you on that question.

For patients without Medicaid or insurance, a few strategies can lower costs:

  • Join a membership plan. The emergency exam and discounts reduce what you pay out of pocket.

  • Use financing. Monthly payments make larger treatments manageable.

  • Ask about phased treatment. Some cases allow the urgent problem to be treated first, with other work scheduled later.

  • Keep up with prevention. Regular exams and Cleanings catch small problems before they become costly emergencies.

Conclusion

An Emergency Dental visit in Virginia typically starts at $100 to $350 for the exam and X-rays, with total costs rising based on treatment. Fillings and bonding fall at the lower end. Root Canals, Crowns, and Extractions land in the middle. Bridges, Dentures, and Implants carry the highest costs. Getting care quickly, understanding your insurance, and using membership plans or financing can all lower what you pay. At Dentcare Now in Fairfax, Dr. Rasheeda Johnson and Dominique Bonner provide same-day Emergency Dental Care 7 days a week, with same-day Crowns, Implants, and tooth replacement available under one roof.
